Loan Fund for Members

Our organization manages a fund through which members can anonymously extend interest-free short-term loans to each other. This allows us to be obedient to verses such as Exodus 22:25 and Deuteronomy 23:19 while helping each other deal with unexpected one-time expenses (such a medical bills, replacing a hot water heater, etc.)

Members can loan money to this fund, understanding that if they request taking it back there may be a delay if it is currently in use. Since money loaned to this fund is not given to the organization it is not eligible for an income tax deduction.

Community Fund

We also help the local Jewish community by paying $18 per month (until this fund is exhausted) towards the utility bills of people who provide reasonable proof of:
  1. Jewish ancestry or established participation in the local (Lane County) Jewish synagogue community
This satisfies Deuteronomy 15:7-8 and Luke 6:35. Examples of appropriate paperwork include a note from a Rabbi, lifecycle event paperwork, contact information for Jewish funeral home used by family members, etc.

  2. Genuine financial need
This satisfies First Timothy 5:3. Examples of appropriate paperwork include enrollment in Oregon Trail (food stamps), receipts for welfare or unemployment insurance payments, living in assisted housing, a note from Rabbi, etc.

  3. Labor in the community
This satisfies Second Thessalonians 3:11-12. Examples of appropriate paperwork include a paycheck, a note from an organization regularly served with volunteer time, etc.
Also, to be unnecessarily careful in making sure the IRS is happy, members of P'nei Adonai are not eligible.

Books for State Prisons

Oregon has 13 state prisons with chaplains (see the bottom of this page). As requested by inmates or chaplains, and as our budget allows, we send a collection of paperback books (see this Amazon list) to Oregon state prison religious libraries.

Other Community Activities

We also have a small fund to help congregants attend regional Messianic Jewish conferences hosted by the MJAA or UMJC.

Global

Our organization is a member of the IAMCS, and thus our members are members of the MJAA.

Through these organizations we support a number of effective and efficient charitable activities. The MJAA's programs include three programs to help all Israelis:

  • the Joseph Project, which brings immense amounts of financial aid in goods to poor Israelis
  • the Nehemiah Project, which offers financial aid in money to poor Israelis
  • the Messianic Israel Forest Project, which plants trees in Israel
two programs to help Jews make aliyah:
  • Operation Tikvah, which helps Ethiopian Jews make aliyah
  • the Russian Emergency Aliyah Fund, which helps Jews in the former Soviet Union make aliyah
and a program to help Messianic Jews in Israel:
  • the Messianic Jewish Israel Fund, which helps Messianic Jewish congregations in Israel
These MJAA programs are remarkably cost-effective. For example, every $1 contributed to the Joseph Project brings about $100 of goods into Israel. The goods, cargo ships, and crew for the ships are all donations, so only fuel for the ships needs to be bought with the contributed funds.

We also support Zambia Messianic Fellowship.

Individuals also support various charities. For example, to help Israel some people donate to the Joseph Storehouse and AFMDA.

The website Jewish Charities provides a fairly complete list of Jewish charities.
