Short Prayer and Sharing ServiceP'{RP'}RP'RP'RPR P'nei Adonai PR1Eugene, Oregon 541.221.3163 www.penei.orgPR IntroductionPR WelcomeP#RThis small prayerbook is for occasions when a group has assembled to pray and wishes to be led through the scriptural steps for drawing near to God, but does not wish to do a full Shabbat service.P#R3These scriptural steps for drawing near to God are:P#R1. Olah (Ascent, Rising), in which we connect with God. Its subsection is Pesookay D'Zeemrah (Verses of Praise) because after properly connecting with God then our instinctual reaction is to give God the praise he deserves.P#R2. Minchah (Giving), in which we surrender ourselves to God. Its subsections are Shema (Hear and Obey), in which we proclaim the reality of God's kingdom and remember our role within it, Amidah (Standing before Adonai), in which we remember God's roles within his kingdom, and Tachanoon (Supplication), which merge the Shema and Amidah by acknowledging that only when God does as he has promised to strengthen us and to sanctify our lives are we able to fulfil our role in his kingdom.P#R3. Chattat and Asham (Atonement for Offenses and Reparation for Guilt), in which we acknowledge God's provision of atonement and redemption, we repent as needed, and we intercede for all God's people.P#R&4. Sh'lamim (Peace Meal), in which we are nourished and made more holy in God's presence. Its subsections are Torah (Teaching), is which we partake of God's Word, K'rooah (Commission), in which we partake of our calling, and Sof B'Shalom (Conclusion of Peace), in which we share food together.P#RThere are potentially many such occasions in which these steps are appropriate but a full liturgical service is not. Examples include a weekday prayer meeting, a gathering at someone's home, a Havdalah celebration, or even a time of "warm up" prayer before a full service begins.P#RIn America, Protest Christianity has developed several examples of "steps of prayer" which often resemble this scriptural model but fall slightly short. For example, a very popular sequence uses the acronym ACTS to stand for Adoration (used similarly to Olah), Confession (used similarly for Chattat and Asham), Thanksgiving and Supplication (these last two would sculpturally be part of Sh'lamim).P#RA condensed experience with all of the scriptural steps for drawing near to God is an effective and appropriate preparation for a longer Shabbat service or some other type of worship occasion. This "extra" repetition of the scriptural steps for drawing near to God fits well within a Hebraic mindset and linguistic style in which a sequential process can be mixed with a circular repetition among themes. A short example well-known to followers of Yeshua is the letter First John, in which the sequence of teaching primarily involves repeating four themes: (a) breaking from sin, (b) keeping the commandments, especially loving each other, (c) living detached from the world, and (d) guarding against false spirituality. The circular repetition among these themes is: (a) verses 1:8 to 2:22, (b) 2:3-11, (c) 2:12-17, (d) 2:18 to 3:2, (a) 3:3-10, (b) 3:11-24, (d) 4:1-6, (a) 5:18, (c) 5:19-20, (d) 5:21. Similarly, there is no limitation that the scriptural steps for drawing near to God are an non-repeatable sequence.PR &Sharing, Liturgy, B'rachot, and PrayerP#RFirst Corinthians 14:26 reads:PRWhen you come together, let each one of you have a psalm, a teaching, a revelation, a message in tongues,or an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up. P#R}This prayerbook provides opportunity for such sharing, since Yeshua's followers are here told to bring something to share when they assemble. Besides psalms, teaching, and revelations other types of things that can be shared to "build each other up" include songs, dances, non-psalm passages from scripture, intercessory prayers, confessions, or accounts of God's recent activity.P#RTo worship well it is important to balance and blend shared contributions with liturgy and b'rachot (blessings), to ensure the scriptural steps for drawing near to God happen and people think about God and their relationship with him in all the appropriate ways. Most of the liturgy used in this prayerbook is traditional and taken from the psalms. Some of the traditional liturgical prayers and b'rachot are modified to include Yeshua.P#RGEven a short time of prayer can make us of techniques that help people focus on God. Most prayers are prayed by the entire assembly, but some are said only by a leader and a few are read responsively. The Amidah is used as it was in the first century, as a sequence of themes for prayer rather than a set of fixed paragraphs.P#RAlso, even this short time of prayer includes times of praying together, praying individually, praying in an intercessory manner, and praying in pairs for each other. Including all of these types of prayer is important as we draw near to God.PR Using this PrayerbookP#RtIf those assembled wish, a different person can lead each section. Alternately one person can lead the entire time.P#RAt the start of each section the section's leader is encouraged to pray aloud as God leads them. This often helps the overall worship experience be one continuous prayer into which all those assembled are invited to join.P#RFollowing Jewish tradition we use the Hebrew word Adonai, which means "my Lord", in place of God's personal four letter name, much the same way many English translations of scripture use a capitalized LORD.P#RSimilarly, we use the original Hebrew name of our Messiah, Yeshua (which means "salvation") because this name is more explicitly meaningful of the mission of the Jewish messiah.P#R\Out of respect for the name of God, please do not put your prayerbook or Bible on the floor.P#R$Prayers whose names are marked with R,7 LEAD``yw }x""""""""""#'6_RS&ҒH֣$`@~#s i} ҇#cS[%7FZ`O@5 ?ajkOUb^FSJϜ,r׼~Ppt3Q-X4qu,e`SOL򳟕hp }#qFq.7abu]JO?BŐDF=K:*<d}tnd` . g/Ϋe6lo{DiS#pO73 w>`/_vm`.pC^ q\xpgAoT`]a%7 pS<kk/vڧK ;]xeUDW׳wד2LmIoKd)XR='`_@ P~qK-RWISA4 B)Yjx@7[i62$h3_: % `xD[/~~Hߟ+(a/=&8q, دM85d 0G\;qw{{AxloGcb78SݧC/WwcZXfWCR ipZ[.
