Worship with Dance

Heet-Halach

Heet-Halach was choreographed by Maggid David. A couple waltz-time songs needed a dance that was slow and slightly stately. The Hebrew word heet-halach means "to walk back and forth".

The entire dance is done facing inward. Part A is done not holding hands. Part B is done with hands held up so palms touch neighbors' palms.

Each numbered step takes three beats of music.

Part A (The verse and instrumental "verse" in between choruses)

  1. Step forward on L foot with a clap, pause for 2 beats (after the clap keep hands raised at head height)
  2. R Yemenite with one step per beat
  3. Step forward on L foot with a clap, pause for 1 beat, sway R (after the clap keep hands raised at head height)
  4. L Yemenite with one step per beat
  5. Do two steps of a Mayim L in waltz time: cross R foot in front of left foot, pause, step to the left with L foot
  6. Finish the Mayim L in waltz time: cross R foot behind the left foot, pause, step to the left with L foot
  7. Step forward with R with hands raised, pause for 2 beats
  8. Step backward with L, pause, sway R
         [repeat]
Part B (Chorus)
  1. Sidestep L with a low bent knee, pause, cross R foot in front of left foot
  2. Step L, then for two counts cross R foot in the air past left foot with toe pointed left and then bring it in a circle back to a normal standing position (but do not put weight on it yet)
  3. Sidestep R with a low bent knee, pause, cross L foot in front of right foot
  4. Step R, then for two counts cross L foot in the air past right foot with toe pointed right and then bring it in a circle back to a normal standing position (but do not put weight on it yet)
  5. Take a big sidestep L, then a smaller step to the left with the R foot; then bring L foot in the air in front of right foot while hopping on R foot
  6. Pause on L foot for 3 beats [fancy alternative: sway forward (L foot), back (R foot), forward (L foot)]
  7. Take a big sidestep R, then a smaller step to the right with the L foot; then bring R foot in the air in front of left foot while hopping on L foot
  8. Pause on R foot for 3 beats [fancy alternative: sway forward (R foot), back (L foot), forward (R foot)]
         [repeat]
The second time Part B happens, the final four steps repeat an additional time and slow down; the alternative steps are more difficult to dance but allows dancers to continue rocking forward and back as the song ends.
