The Messiah in the Tenach
What does the Tenach say about the messiah, the King of the Kingdom of God?
Proverbs 30:4 phrases this as an interesting question!
|
Who established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name? Surely you know!
|
This essay is simply a quick overview of verses from the Tenach about the messiah. Other essays will go into more detail about some of these prophecies.
The following lists are only from the Tenach. Jewish literature contains many more ideas about the messiah. A hope in messiah has been central to Judaism for most of Jewish history, and the messianic plan is central to scripture.
The messiah's death?
- Daniel 9:24-26 - messiah to come and be "cut off" before destruction of Temple
- Isaiah 53:9 - the messiah is buried, dead
- Isaiah 53:12 - the messiah is killed in a manner used to denote sinners
Things that the messiah must do after his death, implying he will come twice.
- Daniel 7:13-14 - the messiah will be given glory and everlasting dominion over all nations
- Isaiah 9:6 - the messiah will King David's throne forever
- Isaiah 53:10-12 - the messiah gets honor and satisfaction after his death
The messiah is worthy of worship
- Joshua 5:13-15 - Joshua sees the commander of God's army and is commanded by this figure to continue worshipping
The messiah as judge and king
- Isaiah 11:1-5 - the messiah will judge, but not by his own sight or righteousness
- Jeremiah 23:5-6 - the messiah will be judge and king, and rule with Adonai's own righteousness
Other events in Yeshua's life
- Isaiah 9:6 - the messiah will be born as a child
- Micah 5:2 - his place of birth will be Bethlehem
- Zechariah 9:9 - Israel's King endowed with salvation, humble and mounted on a donkey
- Isaiah 49:6-7 - the messiah is a light to both the nation of Israel and the Gentiles
- Jeremiah 31:29-34 - Jeremiah prophesies God's new covenant with Israel in a time when individuals, not just nations, will be accountable for sin
- Deuteronomy 18:15-19 - Moses proclaims that a prophet like himself will arise whom the people must obey
The reaction of the majority of the Jewish people to the messiah?
Isaiah 53:1-6 reads:
Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before Him like a tender shoot, like a root out of parched ground.
He has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to him.
He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hid their face, he was despised, and we did not esteem him.
Surely our griefs he himself bore,
And our sorrows he carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced through for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon him, and by his scourging we are healed.
All of us like sheep have gone astray.
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on him.
